Black Panther was a smash hit when it debuted in theaters this past February, giving us not just one of the best movies of the year, but one of the best movies in the superhero genre to date.

This very genre has not had much luck in the realm of the Oscars outside of Heath Ledger's posthumous award for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, but Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige is hoping Black Panther gets a chance to shine.

It's not uncommon for superhero films to be nominated and even film Academy Awards for categories involving special effects, makeup, and such, which Feige mentioned at first in a discussion with Vox about the movie's Oscar chances.

I think there are a lot of amazing artists that helped to make that movie, and it would be wonderful if they could be recognized. Almost everyone involved in that movie, bringing that movie together, is great, and it would be wonderful to see if they’re recognized. We’ll see. This genre, typically not.

Not even The Dark Knight was able to capture a Best Picture nomination, and it's doubtful that will change even with Black Panther.

Even so, Feige mentioned he was hopeful that not only would people involved with the designs be involved, but also people like director Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the script with Joe Robert Cole, as well as actors like Michael B. Jordan with his stellar take on Killmonger.

Feige then went a bit further to explain how he truly felt those involved with the movie deserved a look anyways, even with the biased against the genre in the awards scene.

There’s amazing performances, amazing artistry in that. I’d love to see them recognized, and I’d love to see this genre recognized. Yes, they’re visual effects, yes, they are fun explosions, yes, there are spaceships. But these are all hand-crafted. Maybe it’s in front of a computer; it’s often actual sets, actual hand-built costumes. As much passion and artistry and talent goes into every single one we do; it’d be amazing for them to be recognized.

Hopefully we'll see a major change this year with Black Panther getting some big nominations, but likely we'll see movies like it and Avengers: Infinity War only nominated for the usual awards that they find themselves nominated for once again.
