Sometimes you want to watch a movie just to have fun and turn your brain off.

Not every film has to be an intelligent think piece like a Christopher Nolan film or something like that.

Well this month 'B movie fans have something to look forward to because "The Meg" is out this month to pay homage to the old 'Jaws' movies from the '70s and '80s.

I have to admit, I have never been a fan of horror movies in general and I had no intention of watching The Meg.

The only thing that drew me in was knowing New Zealand actor, Cliff Curtis, is in the main cast. Not to mention the film was also filmed in New Zealand waters.

Well I watched The Meg in its entirety and I was pleasantly surprised by it.

I did not watch any trailers or TV spots beforehand so I came into the movie without knowing any previous spoilers whatsoever.

I'm glad I watched the movie because it's just dumb and fun action despite being a bit cliche at times.

I think the thing I like about most about this movie was how likable the cast was. My favorite actor in the film was Cliff Curtis, but Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Ruby Rose and the little girl in the movie were all very good in this film.

The cast had a lot of great chemistry and there wasn't really one character that acted like a douchebag.

Virtually every character played their part to try and save the other members of the team. There was no real "villain" in the film apart from the big shark.

Speaking of the megalodon shark, it actually gets a lot of screen time in this movie and manages to terrorize a lot of people in the film.

I was impressed that the shark is shown lots of times as I assumed this movie had a small budget, but the shark itself looks decent with the CGI effects.

The only major criticism I can give about this movie is the fact that it feels a little boring and slow at the beginning.

The movie does not get better until the megalodon shark comes to make life a living hell for the main characters.

Another thing some people might not like about 'The Meg' is that it's cliche and only PG-13.

People that want to see something more gory are better off watching something else as this is one of the most tamest shark movies I have ever seen in my life.

That being said, The Meg is still a fun B movie with a great cast and decent amount of action.

Sure it's not a movie that will please everyone, but it's still worth watching if you want to see some B level amount of fun.

Verdict: 3.5/5 stars
