Star Trek: The Next Generation may have ended years ago, but many people still remember Patrick Stewart fondly as he played the character of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for many years.

Well it looks like Patrick Stewart is reprising the role yet again in another new Star Trek TV series that's different from Star Trek: Discovery.

Patrick Stewart himself announced his return to the Star Trek franchise over on his official Twitter page. You can read his full announcement of his return posted down below.

"I will always be proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had runs its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.

During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I'm ready to return to him for the same reason - to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team and we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more."

The new Star Trek show is expected to air on CBS All Access and will serve as a sequel to The Next Generation. This is not a reboot so we should see brand new stories and adventures from Jean-Luc Picard.

No scripts for the show have been written yet, so it might be a long time until we see anything from it.

However, this is a huge announcement that will encourage many Star Treks fans to sign up for CBS All Access.
