The Matrix was popular back when it came out in 1999. The two sequels were not so popular, but the series was revolutionary for its time and many people still talk about it today.

Due to the continued legacy of the franchise, Warner Bros. is interested in rebooting the series for a modern day audience.

As reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is in the early stages of planning a reboot for The Matrix.

Zak Penn has been tipped to write an early script for it while Michael B. Jordan is the studio's main interest to be the lead actor of the film.

It's being said the Wachowski siblings have no involvement in the reboot, although the studio is interested if they gave them their blessing to go ahead with the new project.

Keanu Reeves said he would be interested in returning to the franchise if the Wachoskis were involved.

Since it's said that they want be involved, it looks like we might not see Reeves in the new film if it gets made.

At this stage we're not sure if this will be a total reboot, or just another film set within the same universe.

It will be cool if the movie was like Star Wars: The Force Awakens as that movie was a sequel, but was also a fresh restart for the franchise.

It's not like true reboots where they recast every character and the older films aren't part of the universe.

Whether or not fans will accept a reboot remains to be seen.

Reboots are usually ill received as films such as Ghostbusters 2016, Total Recall 2012, Robocop 2014 and more haven't been all that successful.

Only a handful of reboots succeed such as the new Planet of the Apes films and Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
