There is now context to the Harry Potter family history that, according to J.K. Rowling's recent release on Pottermore, dates back to the 12th century. Pottermore also has a new look and soon a new reporting presence.

"The article, simply title 'The Potter Family,' traces the lineage of the Potters all the way back to the 12th century, where they apparently descended from the wizard Linfred of Stinchcombe, a 'locally well-beloved and eccentric man, whose nickname, 'the Potterer,' became corrupted in time to 'Potter,'" according to USA Today.

"Linfred was a vague and absent-minded fellow whose Muggle neighbours often called upon his medicinal services.

None of them realised that Linfred's wonderful cures for pox and ague were magical; they all thought him a harmless and lovable old chap, pottering about in his garden with all his funny plants.

His reputation as a well-meaning eccentric served Linfred well, for behind closed doors he was able to continue the series of experiments that laid the foundation of the Potter family's fortune," according to Rowling's post.

Along with the family history is a tidbit on the origins of the family's invisibility cloak.

Pottermore has created a new mobile friendly website and also promised a dedicated Pottermore correspondent to report the latest news on all things Harry Potter.

Chances are Pottermore will be gearing up for the upcoming seasonal holidays, such as their 12 Days of Pottermore adventure from last year.
