What to do in Pirin National Park, Bulgaria
Pirin National Park, situated in the southwestern part of Bulgaria, is one of the most beautiful parks in Europe. It’s declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, and it’s truly deserving of the title. The park is named after the Pirin Mountain Range, which is considered the most magnificent mountain in Bulgaria.
The park covers over 40,000 hectares of land and features mountains, glacial lakes, forests, meadows, and the diverse flora and fauna. Numerous trails run through the park, perfect for hikers, trekkers, backpackers, and nature lovers. Without further ado, here are some of the top tourist attractions in the Pirin National Park:
1. Vihren Peak – The highest peak in the Pirin Mountain Range, Vihren Peak stands at 2,914 meters. Spectacular views of Bulgaria and Greece can be seen from the top.
2. Popovo Lake – This emerald green lake is located at the foot of Vihren Peak. It’s one of the deepest glacial lakes in Pirin National Park, and the setting is stunning.
3. The Yulen Nature Reserve – The Yulen Nature Reserve is one of the most protected areas in the park. It’s perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, as it’s home to the Balkan chamois, golden eagle, and brown bear.
4. Pirin's pine forest – Perhaps the most impressive part of Pirin is the never-ending pine forests. It’s a mesmerizing experience to walk through these dark green forests and listen to the wildlife.
5. The Banski Suhodol Valley – This valley is pure magic, for it is full of waterfalls, hidden caves, and greenery. The unique Banski Suhodol valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in Bulgaria.
6. Baikusheva Mura – This old-growth forest is a masterpiece from nature. It contains the oldest tree in Bulgaria, and its size is astounding. It’s a great place for a leisurely walk, where you can find hardly any hikers or tourists.
