What to do in Banaue, Philippines
Banaue, a quaint town in the northern Philippine Cordillera Mountains, is known for its stunning rice terraces that stretch for miles across the countryside. Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it also possesses a rich cultural heritage and tradition that attracts visitors from all over the world. Here, we’ve created a list of the top tourist attractions in Banaue.
1. Banaue Rice Terraces
The Banaue Rice Terraces is what bring visitors here. These terraces are a testament to the ingenuity of the Ifugao tribe who created them almost 2000 years ago using only stones, sticks, and hands. Visitors can hike along the terraces and marvel at the breathtaking scenery, which is especially magnificent during the planting and harvesting season.
2. Tappiya Waterfalls
Tappiya Waterfalls is a 70-meter waterfall located at the base of the rice terraces, making it the perfect pit stop for those who want to freshen up after a long hike. Visitors can take a dip in the refreshing water or enjoy a picnic on the surrounding rocks.
3. Batad Rice Terraces
Another set of rice terraces that’s worth visiting is the Batad Rice Terraces. The terraces are located in a deep valley and are unique due to their amphitheater-like appearance. Visitors can explore the terraces on foot, take a dip in a natural spring, or climb up to the top to witness the stunning view of the surrounding mountains.
4. Banaue Museum
The Banaue Museum is an excellent place to learn more about the history and culture of the Ifugao people. The museum showcases artifacts such as traditional costumes, musical instruments, and household items. Visitors can also watch a cultural show or take part in a weaving activity.
5. Bangaan Rice Terraces
The Bangaan Rice Terraces is another UNESCO World Heritage site located near Banaue. These terraces are smaller than the Banaue Rice Terraces, but equally as impressive. Visitors can hike around the terraces and see traditional Ifugao houses and a beautiful waterfall.
6. Banaue Hot Springs
Located in nearby town of Hapao, Banaue Hot Springs is a great place to relax and take a dip in natural hot springs. The hot springs are located in a beautiful forest setting, making it a perfect place for a picnic.
7. Sagada
Sagada is a nearby town that’s worth visiting to learn more about the mountain culture of the region. Visitors can explore the famous hanging coffins, explore mountain caves, and witness the beautiful sunrise at Kiltepan Peak.
With its rich cultural heritage, stunning rice terraces, and natural hot springs, Banaue is a must-visit destination in the Philippines. Whether you’re a nature lover, a culture buff, or a history enthusiast, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque town.
