Contemporary artist Takashi Murakami will open an exhibition of his newest works at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City, and has shared a number of tweets and instagrams revealing the progress of his inimitable creations.

"In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow"opens November 10, and will be a major installation showcasing the Tokyo artist's most recent painting and sculpture.

A statement published on the gallery's website reads: "In totemic sculptures representing demons, religious sites, and self-portraits ... Murakami investigates the role of faith amid the inexorable transience and trauma of existence."

The sculptures are breathtaking, even in a cropped and pixelated form. They are very reminiscent of the lighting and style found in a Buddhist temple, or of the placement and context of a Japanese zen garden.

Murakami has also posted other sculptures and paintings that are set to appear in the show on his Instagram, showcasing his studio set up, and how he puts the finishing touches on some of his work.

Previous to his showing at the Gagosian Gallery, other major solo exhibitions by Murakami were seen at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Serpentine Gallery in London, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo.

The exhibition will run through January 17, 2015, and the opening reception for the exhibition takes place Monday, November 10, from 6-8 p.m.
