Influential ESPN sports writer Bill Simmons was suspended three weeks after he called NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a liar on Twitter.

Simmons made the comments on his podcast where he basically dared ESPN to suspend him or otherwise punish him for the remarks.

"Goodell, if he didn't know what was on that tape, he's a liar," Simmons said on his podcast. "I'm just saying it. He is lying. If you put him up on a lie detector test, that guy would fail.

For all these people to pretend they didn't know is such [expletive]ing [expletive]. It really is, it's such [expletive]ing [expletive]. For him to go into that press conference and pretend otherwise ... I was so insulted."

Those remarks got him suspended but the online community, even many who don't care for Simmons, have lashed out at the Sports Leader using the hashtag #freebillsimmons.

The hashtag has been trending since the suspension was announced. Simmons edits ESPN's Grantland.com, hosts a podcast, and appears of various programs for the network, This is not his first suspension.

ESPN issued a press release on the suspension but has not responded to fans calling for his reinstatement.
