It was a huge weekend for Disney and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War. Not only did it dominate the worldwide and domestic box office, it also set an IMAX Theatres Worldwide record.

"IMAX Corporation announced that Marvel's Captain America: Civil War opened with a record-setting $31.3 million on 955 IMAX screens globally, making it the largest opening ever for an IMAX release in May, as well as the third-best IMAX opening for a day-and-date release, including China," according to a recent release.

"Overall, Captain America: Civil War scored the fourth-largest global opening weekend ever in IMAX. To date, Captain America: Civil War has grossed $45 million in IMAX globally.

Domestically, Captain America: Civil War delivered $16 million on 380 IMAX screens. The film's North American debut kicked off with particularly strong presales and continued with sell-outs throughout the weekend."

There is no surprise that the film opened up as well as it did.

It teased a large lineup of superheroes including the debut of the Black Panther and the all new Spiderman. The highly anticipated film also carried a ton of promotion going into its release.

"The world is in a civil war at the box office and that's a good thing as Disney/Marvel's 'Captain America: Civil War' draws massive numbers of fans to multiplexes around the globe this weekend to the tune of $401.8 million and a grand total in just 12 days of $678.4 million," said comScore's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, according to a second release.
