Abe Vigoda was a celebrity who spanned generations.
Because of his distinctive sunken eye look and his ageless charm, he remained a beloved figure on talk shows ans the Internet even to an audience which had no idea that he was on Barney Miller or even what Barney Miller is.
Vigoda's fame in recent years has been less about his acting in films including The Godfather and more about being that good-natured old guy who walks through on Conan.
Long past his acting prime Vigoda had a presence, a likability that made him appeal even to kids who had no idea who he was.
Abe Vigoda has been around for forever and he felt like a distant relative.
An older uncle who slipped you a drink, still got the joke, and preferred to sit at the kid's table. He will be missed and the Twitterverse was alive with tributes, jokes, and memories in honor of his passing.

I will always remember Abe Vigoda visiting Conan's set just to be in a 1 second clip of Conan cutting to an Abe Vigoda joke.

So you've had literally 30 years to write a good obit for Abe Vigoda and your headline calls him a "sunken-eyed character actor"?
