In November, Takamatsu is relatively cool and somewhat rainy. Temperatures routinely are in the low 60s F (mid 10s C) range. At night, lows are in the 40s F (single digits C). What to do in Takamatsu, Japan
Takamatsu, located on the southern coast of Japan's Shikoku Island, is a city with a rich history and cultural heritage. It's the capital of Kagawa Prefecture, famous for its udon noodles and lush green mountains. Takamatsu has a lot to offer to tourists, including beautiful gardens, historic castles, and stunning natural scenery. Here are some must-see places that should be on your Takamatsu itinerary.
1. Ritsurin Garden
Ritsurin Garden is one of Japan's most beautiful and largest traditional gardens, spanning over 75 hectares. It was designed during the Edo Period and features a unique blend of Japanese and Chinese gardening styles. The garden has six ponds, thirteen hills, and over 1,400 pine trees, some of which are over 300 years old. It's an ideal place to take a leisurely stroll, enjoy the scenery, and relax over a cup of tea.
2. Takamatsu Castle
Takamatsu Castle, also known as Tamamo Castle, was built in the 16th century by feudal lord Ikoma Chikamasa. It's a symbol of Takamatsu's power and prosperity during the Edo Period. Despite being destroyed several times by fires and conflicts, the castle was restored to its former glory in 2004. 3. Yashima
Yashima is a small mountain located on the outskirts of Takamatsu known for its historic significance and scenic beauty. It was the site of a famous battle in 1185 between the Taira and Minamoto clans, which resulted in a victory for the latter. Yashima is now home to various attractions, such as Yashima-ji Temple, Yashima Park, and Yashima Aquarium.
4. Shikoku Mura
Shikoku Mura is an open-air museum that showcases the traditional architecture, arts, and crafts of Shikoku Island. It's home to over 30 historic buildings, including farmhouses, samurai houses, and a kabuki theater. Visitors can participate in various workshops, such as making rice cakes, weaving baskets, and dyeing fabrics.
5. Marugame Castle
Marugame Castle, also known as Kameyama Castle, was built in 1597 by feudal lord Ikoma Chikamasa. It's one of Japan's 12 surviving original castles and is famous for its unique five-story donjon. The castle's interior has been converted into a museum that displays various artifacts and historical items.
6. Kagawa Prefectural Cultural Hall
Kagawa Prefectural Cultural Hall is a modern concert hall that hosts various performances, such as classical music concerts, traditional Japanese music, and plays. The hall's main feature is its pipe organ, which has 7,000 pipes and is one of the largest in Japan. The hall also has a beautiful garden that's ideal for strolling and relaxing.
