Waisai is the capital of the Raja Ampat District and is the administrative hub for the archipelago. Exploring this village provides an opportunity to witness the local culture, traditional architecture and interact with friendly locals. You can wander around the market and shop for souvenirs, try local food like ‘Papeda' (a starchy Papuan delicacy), visit the harbor to catch up Raja Ampat's boat traffic, and take a leisurely walk exploring the village and its surrounding areas.
5. Wreck Diving
Sorong was a significant naval base during World War II, and the waters around the island are littered with shipwrecks that offer excellent diving experiences. The most famous of these wrecks is the USS Liberty, which was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1943. Today, it is one of the most popular dive sites in Sorong and is home to a diverse collection of marine life.
In conclusion, Sorong is a fascinating place offering a wide range of experiences for travelers, from bird-watching to snorkeling, relaxing on the beach and learning about local culture. When planning your travels to Indonesia, Sorong should definitely be on your list.
