What to do in Sillustani, Peru
Sillustani is a small village located on the shores of Lake Umayo, in the Puno region of Peru. It is renowned for its fascinating archaeological site that is believed to have been the site of one of the most advanced pre-Inca cultures, the Colla people. The site of Sillustani boasts an impressive collection of megalithic towers or chullpas that were used as tombs to bury their elite members. These historical relics are among the top tourist attractions in Peru and the South America region.
The Chullpas
The highlight of Sillustani's archeological site is undoubtedly the ancient tower-like tombs called chullpas, which have survived for over a thousand years. The chullpas, made from stone, have an incredible cylindrical shape that stands tall and stark against the blue sky. The walls of the chullpas are smooth on the outside, but the interior features elaborate architectural details, such as niches and setbacks. The chullpas, therefore, represent the skills of Pre-Inca engineers.
The largest chullpa at Sillustani stands at an impressive 12 meters tall and appears to have been constructed in tiers or platforms with a circular opening at the top, which was likely used for ceremonial purposes. Visitors can go inside the smaller ones and explore the cramped, dark interior which would have contained the remains of the deceased.
Archaeological Museum
The Sillustani Archaeological Museum is another must-visit attraction. It houses a vast collection of artefacts and mummies that give visitors a glimpse into the lives of the Colla people. The exhibition includes pottery, textiles, and stone tools, all of which were crafted by the community members. The museum also provides an informative account of the traditional practices of the Colla culture, as well as the relationship they had with the natural environment.
Lake Umayo
Lake Umayo is a picturesque body of water that stretches for around 10 km and is located below the hill on which Sillustani stands. The lake's tranquil waters provide numerous opportunities for activities such as kayaking, fishing, or picnicking. The lakeside is also home to a wide range of bird species whose pleasant chirping adds to the peaceful atmosphere of the area.
Spectacular Scenery
Sillustani is situated on a hill and is surrounded by the stunning and mesmerizing scenery of the region. The picturesque landscape makes for excellent long walks or hikes, characterized by panoramic views of the Andes Mountains and the pastoral rural farmland that spread out like a patchwork quilt.
Conclusion
Sillustani is a fascinating archaeological site that offers an excellent insight into the ancient history and culture of the Colla people. The chullpas, which are the main highlight of the area, have consistently been ranked among the top tourist attractions in South America. Visitors can also explore the Sillustani Archaeological Museum and enjoy the stunning natural scenery surrounding the site. Whether you are a history buff, architecture enthusiast or adventure seeker, Sillustani represents one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences in Peru.
