What to do in Mumbai, India
Mumbai, also known as Bombay is one of the most vibrant and populous cities in India. It is the commercial capital and the largest city in India, and a major hub of industry, entertainment, and lifestyle. Mumbai has an array of tourist attractions that lure scores of tourists from around the globe. Here are some of the must-see and top tourist attractions in Mumbai, India.
1. The Gateway of India- The Gateway of India is a famous landmark in Mumbai, located at the tip of Apollo Bunder in Colaba. It was built in 1924 to honour the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. It is a symbol of freedom and independence, and one of the most photographed attractions in Mumbai. It is a popular spot to enjoy the sea breeze and grab a bite from street vendors.
2. Marine Drive- Marine Drive is a 3.6 km-long boulevard running along the coast of the Arabian Sea. It is also known as the "Queen's Necklace" because of the way the streetlights twinkle at night, reflecting off the sea. Marine Drive is best visited at night when one can enjoy the sea breeze, the twinkling lights and the ambiance of the city.
3. Elephanta Caves- Elephanta Caves are located on the Elephanta Island near Mumbai. The caves date back to the 6th century and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The caves showcase carvings and sculptures that depict the Hindu god, Shiva. It is accessible via ferry and is a perfect getaway from Mumbai.
4. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus- The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a historic train station in Mumbai. It was built in 1887 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The terminus is designed in Victorian Gothic architecture and is one of the most beautiful train stations in India. It connects Mumbai to various cities and states.
5. Haji Ali Dargah- Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque located on an islet off the coast of Worli in Mumbai. It was built in 1431 in memory of a Muslim saint, Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. It is one of the most visited and revered sites in Mumbai. The mosque can be reached by a walkway during low tide and offers a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea.
6. Siddhivinayak Temple- The Siddhivinayak Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god, Ganesha. It is the most famous temple in Mumbai and is visited by scores of devotees every year. The temple is located in Prabhadevi and is known for its beautiful architecture and spiritual atmosphere.
