Gränna is a beautiful Swedish town located on the eastern shore of Lake Vattern. It is famous for its traditional red and white striped candy, known as polkagris, which was invented here in the 1850s by a local woman named Amalia Eriksson. However, there is much more to Gränna than just a sugary treat. Here are some of the top tourist attractions that you should not miss when visiting Gränna.
1. Polkagris candy making: A visit to Gränna is incomplete without watching a candy-making demonstration. You can visit one of the local candy factories and watch how the candy is made by hand, twisted and turned into its iconic striped design. The candy-makers often give you a chance to try your own hand at making the candy, too!
2. Visingsö Island: The island of Visingsö is a popular destination for tourists who come to Gränna. Located in the middle of Lake Vattern, it is accessible by boat or ferry from the mainland. Visingsö offers beautiful landscapes, beaches, and lots of recreational activities like biking and hiking routes. Also, be sure to check out the ruins of the old Visingsö castle, which was once one of the centerpieces of Swedish history.
3. Brahehus Castle: Another must-see attraction in Gränna is Brahehus Castle, which sits on a hill overlooking the town. This beautiful castle was built in the 17th century by Count Per Brahe, who was the governor-general of Sweden. Today, visitors can explore the castle's beautiful gardens and take in the stunning views of Lake Vattern from the top of the castle.
4. Annual events: Gränna plays host to several annual events throughout the year that you should consider attending. The most famous of these events is the polkagris festival in July, which celebrates the town's candy heritage. At this colorful festival, you can sample different varieties of polkagris and even join in competitions trying to eat the longest candy strand. Other annual events include the Visingsö fair, which takes place in August, and the Christmas Market in December.
5. Lake Vattern and surrounding region: Finally, the natural beauty of Lake Vattern and the surrounding region is a major draw for tourists to Gränna. The area is rich in wildlife, with many opportunities for hiking, camping, boating, and fishing. There are also several designated nature reserves nearby, each offering something unique and beautiful to see.
Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply love candy, Gränna is a destination worth visiting. With its diverse attractions, beautiful scenery, and charming small-town ambiance, Gränna is sure to leave a lasting impression on any visitor.
