What to do in Ellora, India
Ellora in Maharashtra, India is a world-renowned heritage site that displays the rich cultural heritage of India. Ellora Cave Temples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts millions of tourists every year. A famous group of rock-cut temples, Ellora is home to some of the country's most beautiful and architecturally impressive rock-cut caves.
The Ellora Cave Temples built between the 6th and 10th centuries AD under the authority of Rashtrakuta Dynasty, represent an artistic culmination of the age-old rock-cut architecture flourishing in ancient India. The site includes 12 Buddhist, 17 Hindu, and five Jain temples, representing the various religious sects that coexisted harmoniously in this region.
The most impressive out of all the different temples in Ellora is the Kailasa Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The entire temple was carved out of a single piece of rock, making it an impressive marvel of ancient engineering. The carved pillars, sculptures, and intricate carvings on walls and ceilings of the temple are a delight for the eyes.
The Buddhist caves, known as Ajanta and the Hindu caves in Ellora were both constructed during the reign of the Kalachuri dynasty of central India. The Ajanta Caves date back to the 2nd century BC and are famous for their beautiful paintings that depict the life and teachings of Buddha. The paintings of these caves are among the oldest surviving Indian art and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Apart from the cave temples, tourists can also visit the Daulatabad Fort, a fortified city that was once the capital of the Yadava Empire in the 12th century. The fort was built on the orders of Muhammad bin Tughlaq and is known for its impressive structure and the unique way the walls were designed to protect the town. There are also plenty of shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs outside the fort.
Another popular attraction for visitors is the Grishneshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. Located just 30 km from Ellora, the temple is dedicated to the Lord and is also known as the Kusumeswarar Temple.
In conclusion, Ellora is an impressive heritage site that attracts visitors from all over the world. The stunning rock-cut temples, beautiful paintings, and impressive architecture make it an unforgettable experience for tourists. A visit to this site should be on every traveler's bucket list while touring India.
