It looks like Tom Hanks' Sully film was such highly anticipated that it topped both domestic and worldwide box offices on the weekend of September 11, 2016. The film made a huge debut besting films such as Star Trek Beyond.

"Warner Bros.

had quite an amazing weekend globally in theaters with 'Sully' starring Tom Hanks taking the top spot with $45 million, local title 'The Age of Shadows' (Mil Jeong) opening in Korea with $16 million and 'Suicide Squad' now just within striking distance of $700 million worldwide," according to Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

Hanks stopped by The Ellen Show last week to promote the film and also had a Pixar-off with Ellen DeGeneres.

Around the world, Star Trek Beyond sat at the number two spot while Sony's Don't Breathe hung on at number three.
