When Star Wars was acquired by Disney six years ago, the franchise was unstoppable and Disney anticipated that the series will continue to thrive like Marvel has with its MCU. Fast forward a few years later and it looks like Star Wars isn't fully immune to criticism.

Even though Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were well received, the same cannot be said about Star Wars: The Last Jedi directed and written by Rian Johnson.

That film was liked by critics, but a large part of the average movie going audience criticized it heavily.

The poor fan reception of Star Wars: The Last Jedi played a factor in Solo: A Star Wars Story performing badly at the Box Office when it came out earlier this year.

Solo became the lowest grossing live action Star Wars movie of all time and this halted Disney's plan to make more spin-off solo films for the time being.

Since many people blamed Rian Johnson for the decline in Star Wars' popularity, there were rumors that Disney canceled his planned trilogy that will be out after Episode IX in 2019.

However, it looks like Rian Johnson is still working on his own trilogy and plans are still underway.

Rian Johnson answered with a simple "yup" on his official Twitter account that he is still busy working on his own Star Wars trilogy. The rumors of its cancellation appear to be false.

That said, it will be interesting to see if fans will turn up and watch this new trilogy.

This will be the first set of Star Wars live action movies that will not focus on the Skywalker timeline. Instead, these new movies will be in an entirely different galaxy.
