Melissa McCarthy shared her unique path to becoming a movie star in a candid interview with Howard Stern Tuesday.

The actress, who has her new film "Tammy" coming out next week told the radio host about her brief time performing stand-up as well as her many years as a member of the Groundlings comedy troupe.

Though she appeared in Groundlings with a number of future "Saturday Night Live stars including future
Bridesmaids" co-star Kristen Wiig she was never even given a chance to audition.

The actress explained this as simply being bad luck where she would simply be taking a rare night offer whenever SNL talent scouts showed up to check out the famed comedy group.

McCarthy also told Stern that she had set a deadline where if she was not a working actor by her 30th birthday she would pack things in.

She achieved that scoring a supporting role on "Gilmore Girls" which lasted for seven years before her unlikely star turn in "Bridesmaids."

Stern saw McCarthy as the breakout star of the movie (she received an Oscar nomination) but that's not how the character was written.

Her role was intended to be quiet and meek. 'I guess I read it wrong', McCarthy said of her brash portrayal.
