Shepard Fairey, the once guerrilla street artist turned legitimate, had his Fishtown mural defaced over the weekend. In the street art world, Fairey stands pretty close the top of the pyramid, but graffiti writers think differently than most.

They tagged his new mural with terrible lines of spray paint with no artistic value what-so-ever. Shepard recently made news while defending a fellow street artist against clothing maker 'American Eagle Outfitters'.

Shepard was commissioned for the mural in Philadelphia, so even though the piece was vandalized, Shepard still took home a paycheck. The irony of the whole situation of course is that Shepard made his living vandalizing the world around him.

The response to the vandalizing has been mixed, but most find the tags distasteful in the context of a beautiful mural.
