A new RoboCop movie was in the works that was supposed to take place after the events of the second movie. Well now it looks like the director has pulled out and the status of the movie is unclear.

District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp, was supposed to direct the new film that was being called RoboCop Returns. It was a sequel to the first two movies and was supposed to forget about the other films in the franchise.

Sadly, Neill Blomkamp has confirmed on his official Twitter account that he is no longer directing the movie. You can read his statement posted down below.

"Off Robocop. I am shooting new horror/thriller and MGM can’t wait/ need to shoot Robocop now. Excited to watch it in theaters with other fans."

From the sound of his tweet, it looks like MGM are going ahead with the movie, but a new director is likely to step in. This isn't the first time Blomkamp had to pull out of a major franchise.

Blomkamp wanted to make an Alien 5 movie several years ago, but those plans didn't come into fruition because 20th Century Fox decided to make the Alien prequels with Ridley Scott instead.

The last RoboCop film to come out was a reboot in 2014 simply called 'RoboCop'. A sequel was never made because the movie only managed to make over $242 million worldwide at the Box Office.
