'Modern Family' Star Ariel Winter Opens Up About Her Mother on the Ellen DeGeneres Show

Star of the hit TV show Modern Family, Ariel Winter stopped by the Ellen DeGeneres show to talk about being a role model for younger girls, being bullied about her breast reduction and also opened up about her emancipation from her mother.

In the video below DeGeneres talked about how amazing the show Modern Family was a pointed out that Winter is actually the smart one in the family. Winter said she believed it was important for young girls to see that it's cool to be smart.

She wants them to know that you can still be cool and have friends while also taking care of your education.

Winter is 18-years-old and the last time she was on the Ellen DeGeneres Show she was 13. DeGeneres told Winter that she has been through a lot since then.

Winter was emancipated from her mother, which means she has become her own entity. She handles her own business, living arrangements and pretty much everything else. From the age of 14 to 17 there was a legal custody battle going on.

Winter says that her sister, actress Shanelle Workman, has been the best part of her life. She told DeGeneres that her sister means everything to her and that she has been there for her throughout everything that has gone on in her life.

Neither she nor her sister has a relationship with their mother.

DeGeneres says there is a reason she doesn't want to be connected to her mother and Winter says it's been much better for her both physically and emotionally to be on her own in a safer household and support system.

Winter says she doesn't really talk about why she doesn't want a relationship with her mother, though it has been publicized. She wants to give her mother the same respect that she didn't receive from her mother publicly. DeGeneres pointed out that Winter's mother Chrystal Workman went on the Dr.

Phil show to try and share her side of the story. Winter accused her mother of physical abuse and spending her earnings.

Winter says she is not into trying to make herself look better and that people can make their own judgements, however, she did what she had to do for herself.

Winter revealed that her mother put her in the entertainment industry at the age of 4, and she didn't choose it, however, she loves the industry. She does go to a real High School and is currently in the process of applying to colleges to become a lawyer. Winter says she is treated normally and no one really cares that she is on the show, which she loves.
