"Well, the last Foo Fighters record that we made, we made in my garage because I wanted to take the band out of our comfort zone," Grohl told DeGeneres, "which is our own studio and see how the outside environment influences the outcome of the music."

"Then I made the 'Sound City Documentary,' which is a documentary about a studio in Los Angeles and I had never done before," said Grohl.

"It turn alright but the response from it was really great.

People would come up to me all the time and say 'man I was really inspired by that movie I never considered the studio owners and the places where albums were recorded' and it gave everyone a new appreciation of how music is made and given to people."

It is these two ideas that Grohl though about when the time came for him and the Foo Fighters to record a new album and he fused the idea of creating a documentary and an album.

Instead of just any normal documentary, Grohl decided to make the film an eight part special that would each run around one hour long.

His challenge to the band this time was to go to eight different cities and eight different studios to create "Sonic Highways."

The band began playing music in the studio that they were in, Grohl specifically uses New Orleans as his example, and while the music is made the lyrics don't come together until the bands last day in the city.

During the week, Grohl sets out to interview different musical figures who are important to the cities music scene to form a transcript that he then uses to create the lyrics.

The song is then recorded on the final day making it a creative process that was pretty interesting to say the least.

DeGeneres was able to relate to the New Orleans music scene as she told Grohl that she grew up around New Orleans music scene and that's why music is so important to her.

Grohl elaborated on the cultural aspect about New Orleans and how the history of the city is not just music it is all of the cultures that past through it fused together.

Grohl also talked about his children especially his "brand new child" and how his day starts.

His three month old baby Ophelia Saint Grohl, his daughters Violet 8 and Harper 5 are important to him as he spends time in the morning dropping them off to school.

Since Degeneres didn't have a photo she asked Grohl to draw what his newest member of the Grohl family looks like and it was pretty comedic.

The singer says that he drives his kids to school every single morning, packs all of the lunches, gets the breakfast ready, loads his kids up in the minivan and drives 45 minutes back home to finally start his day.
