As you may know already, Disney is releasing Mary Poppins Returns starring Emily Blunt as the popular character. The original actress, Julie Andrews, has stated her reasons why she will not appearing in the sequel in any capacity.

Entertainment Weekly posted an article about Andrews not appearing in the sequel in order to let Emily Blunt shine in the movie.

Andrews did not want to overshadow Blunt as it's her movie now. You can read what Andrews had to say below.

This is Emily's show, and I really want it to be Emily's show. I don't want it to be, "Oh, here comes that Mary Poppins." I don't want that. I really want her to take this and run with it, because she will be brilliant.

Mary Poppins Returns is actually a canonical sequel as opposed to a remake or reboot so Andrews would have had to play a different character if she wanted to make a cameo of some sort.

It is a bit classy for Andrews not to appear in the movie at all since she wants to pass the torch to Emily Blunt.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen Andrews appear in a cameo much like Stan Lee does in every Marvel movie.

That being said, I respect her decision to make sure Blunt is the main focus of the movie instead.

It's also great that Disney decided to make a sequel as remakes and/or reboots are boring since they usually offer the same storyline.

It's also interesting that Disney chose to make a sequel 54 years after the original came out in 1964. This must be one of the longest gaps between sequels.

Other sequels that took decades in the making include Tron Legacy and Blade Runner 2049. The new Mary Poppins movie is out on Christmas Day 2018.
