January 16 is the release date for the highly anticipated Clint Eastwood movie American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper.

The movie is based on the autobiography by Chris Kyle who is the most lethal sniper in American history. Certainly a good premise for a war movie.

This movie didn't get any Golden Globe nominations but that's probably because it hasn't come out yet. Early predictions have this film being a major player in the Oscar race.

A lot of stars have taken to twitter to show their praise for the movie. Jonah Hill in particular made sure to highlight the performance of Cooper in the lead role.

This movie seems like it will join a long list of career defining war films. Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan and Robert De Niro in The Deer Hunter come to mind.

All signals point to a similar type of performance from arguably the hottest actor on the planet.

Cooper has been nominated for Oscars the past two years for his roles in American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook. Will it be three in a row for the 39 year old?

Clint Eastwood as the director is also another reason to trust this movie. Recent films like Gran Torino and Million Dollar Baby are highly acclaimed.

Yet the last time he directed a war movie was 1986's Heartbreak Ridge starring himself. We will have to see if he has lost his touch.

Make sure to aim down the sights and check out American Sniper coming out on January 16.
