This week's episode of MTV's Unlocking the Truth introduces a new case, that of Byron Case, who is serving two life sentences for the alleged murder of a woman named Anastasia WitbolsFeugen. But did he do it?

If you haven't seen the last episode, you can see our recap at the link at the bottom of the page.

Unlocking the Truth: Back to Kalvin Michael Smith

This episode of Unlocking the Truth begins in North Carolina, where the last episode left off. Ryan and Eva have found Eugene Littlejohn, a key witness in the Kalvin Michael Smith case.

In the last episode, he was unwilling to talk, but now he begins to open up.

They ask Eugene what the detective had told him, but he says it's been too long and doesn't remember everything. He does, however, tell them that he was surprised when the detectives came to question him in the case.

Eugene continues, saying that the detective, Detective Williams, told him that Kalvin had confessed to killing Jill Parker (you can read more about her at the Episode 3 recap link below), the victim of the murder. Detective Williams also told Eugene that Kalvin had said that Eugene was at the scene of the crime.

Eugene tells Ryan that he would never have stood by while a woman was beaten and killed, but the detective threatened him into his testimony.

Every day for several weeks after the crime, the detective harassed Eugene at home, questioning him over and over. Eugene further claims that he's never even been to Parker's store.

The Unlocking the Truth team then go looking for another witness, Pamela Moore (you can read more about the witnesses in the previous episode recaps linked at the bottom of the page).

Pamela tells Ryan and Eva that Kalvin was her friend, and she wants to tell her part of the story.

Pamela tells the Unlocking the Truth team that she was also threatened into implicating Kalvin, and that although she made a statement saying that he had heard Kalvin talking about the murder, she never actually heard that.

Instead, she says her boyfriend at the time had told her that. According to her, the detective threatened to jail her on separate charges if she didn't make the statement against Kalvin.

Ryan tells Eva that this case is especially important to him because it is a lot like the case he was jailed for.

Unlocking the Truth: Back to Michael Politte

We then return to the Michael Politte case (which you can read about from the previous recaps below). The Unlocking the Truth team introduces the only other person in the house on the day of the murder, Michael's friend Josh Sansoucie.

There is a recording of Josh's testimony. In it Josh says that he had decided to stay at Michael's house that night because he had just smoked a joint, and his eyes were red.

Josh goes on to say that Michael asked him if he wanted to start a fire. Josh's response was "whatever." The two then walked down the railroad tracks (see the previous recaps for more on the railroad tracks) and poured an oil jug onto the tracks. They lit the fire and returned home, at which time Michael's mother, Rita Politte, returned.

Josh says he and Michael then went to bed. Josh says he woke up to the smell of smoke, and he and Michael left the house to notify a neighbor.

At some point, the police decided that Michael was a suspect, so they tried to get information out of Josh. In his first written statement, Josh says nothing of significance. In his second statement -- the video statement -- he says that he woke up to some noises, and Michael wasn't in his bed.

He says the bed was made, and Michael wasn't in the room at all. This wasn't in the original statement.

The Unlocking the Truth team thinks that Josh sounds like he was reading a script in the video.

They note that Josh later made a third statement where he says he wasn't able to see if Michael was in his bed on the night of the murder.

The Unlocking the Truth team decides to go looking for Josh, who until now, hasn't been willing to talk to Michael's lawyers. They find some of his friends, who believe Michael is innocent. They say that the detective in the case was biased against Michael.

They also say that Josh had been beat up for implicating Michael, and they give a clue as to where Josh may be.

Another friend of Josh, meanwhile, tells Eva that Josh had told him that nothing out of the ordinary happened on the night of the murder.

The friend also says Josh was questioned over and over, and it was hard for him to repeat the same answers over and over.

Ryan's girlfriend finds possible addresses for Josh, and Ryan goes looking for him. Ryan texts Josh, and he responds saying that he's not interested in talking.

Unlocking the Truth: A New Case -- Byron Case

We are then introduced to a new case, that of Byron Case, which involves the murder of Anastasia WitbolsFeugen.

The night of the murder, Anastasia was hanging out with Byron Case and his girlfriend (Kelly Moffett), as well as Anastasia's boyfriend (Justin Bruton). Justin and Anastasia had problems in their relationship.

Kelly and Byron told police that Anastasia and Justin had an argument that night and that she got out of the car and Justin drove away. The police were obviously interested in talking to Justin, but he had disappeared.

His body was found a few days later -- he had committed suicide by shooting himself.

But the gun he used to kill himself didn't match the gun used in the murder, and with no murder weapon, police had to continue investigating.

Several years later, Kelly went to police, saying that she had been lying initially and that Byron was in fact the murderer. In her new testimony, she told police that Byron had gotten out of his car and got his gun out of the trunk, and then he shot Anastasia.

Police asked Kelly to get a recorded confession out of Byron, and when Kelly asked Byron, he said nothing, which led police to believe Byron was guilty (we'll discuss this later).

Byron's goth dress also led police to be suspicious of him.

Byron's conviction rested on Kelly's testimony, in which she said she witnessed the murder but didn't remember a lot of what happened.

The Unlocking the Truth team interviews Byron, who claims that Kelly was a liar.

The team determined that right before Kelly made the accusation, Byron had moved away with a woman named Jamie. Jamie meets Ryan and Eva in their office, and recounts her memories of Byron.

Jamie claims that Kelly had gotten mixed up with drugs and was homeless. She would go to Byron when she hit rock bottom, and he wasn't able to continue to deal with it.

So he decided to move away, which allegedly made Kelly very angry. According to Jamie, Kelly said that "she would make his life a living hell if he left."

Jamie says she wasn't surprised that Kelly made the accusation, given her history of lying.

Finally, we hear the recording mentioned above, where Kelly tries to get Byron to admit to the murder. On the recording, Kelly tells Byron that the investigators started calling again and that they need to get their stories straight, or they're both in trouble.

Then she asks "why did you have to kill her -- what was the whole big deal? ...

If you could explain to me why you felt the need to kill her that would make me feel better about the whole thing."

And Byron doesn't respond, except to say "we shouldn't talk about this."
