What to do in Zakynthos, Greece
Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a stunning island located in the Ionian Sea, Greece. Boasting crystal-clear waters, lush green landscapes, and strong historical and cultural significance, Zakynthos is a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Greece.
Here are some of the top tourist attractions that you shouldn’t miss in Zakynthos:
1. Navagio Beach:
Also commonly referred to as the Shipwreck Beach, this is arguably the most famous and photographed spot on the island, and for good reason. Navagio beach boasts white sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and a stunning shipwreck of a smuggler’s boat that washed ashore in 1980. It is accessible only by boat, but a trip well worth it.
2. Blue Caves:
Located in the northern part of the island are the famous Blue Caves, a series of sea caves carved into the cliffs by the waves over the years. The caves were named after the crystal-clear blue waters that reflect on the inside of the caves. Visitors can take boat tours to explore the caves and the surrounding area.
3. Marathonisi Island:
This tiny island located just off the coast of Zakynthos is a hidden gem that is not to be missed. Also known as Turtle Island, it is the nesting ground of endangered loggerhead turtles, which are known to lay their eggs on the island’s sandy beaches. The island is accessible only by boat, and it offers a serene escape from the crowds.
4. The Venetian Castle:
The castle is an important landmark in Zakynthos and was built by the Venetians in the 15th century to protect the island from Ottoman invasion. It offers stunning panoramic views of the island and is the perfect spot for anyone interested in Greek history and architecture.
5. Keri Village and Lighthouse:
This charming village is located on the southern tip of the island and offers spectacular views of the Ionian Sea. Visitors can stroll through the traditional cobblestone streets and admire the colorful houses and shops. The nearby Keri Lighthouse is a must-visit attraction, offering stunning sunset views over the sea.
These attractions are merely examples of what Zakynthos has to offer. The island is home to numerous other hidden bays and coves, traditional villages, and remarkable natural landscapes that are guaranteed to make your stay a memorable one. Whether you are looking to relax and soak up the sun or explore the island’s rich history and culture, Zakynthos has something for everyone.
