What to do in Vardzia, Georgia

Vardzia is a fascinating and historic cave monastery in Georgia that is one of the country's top tourist attractions. The site is located in the south of the country, close to the Turkish border, and is a must-visit destination for anyone who loves history, architecture, and stunning natural scenery.

The monastery of Vardzia dates back to the 12th century when it was founded by King George III of Georgia. It was built as a defensive fortress against the Mongol invasions that were ravaging the region at the time. The caves were also built to protect the Christian population of Georgia from Muslim invaders, which were a constant threat to this region of the Caucasus.

Today, Vardzia is a complex of around 600 caves that spans over 1,000 meters. The caves themselves are a marvel of medieval engineering and are interconnected by tunnels and stairs. The caves are dug into a steep cliff face, and some of them stretch to over 13 stories high.
