What to do in Tsuwano, Japan
Tsuwano is a small, picturesque town located in the Shimane Prefecture of Japan. It is renowned for its well-preserved traditional Japanese atmosphere, Edo-period architecture, and its rich cultural heritage. The town offers tourists a variety of unique experiences such as the Tsuwano Karakuri Yatai, Shinto celebrations, and local cuisine.
Here are the top tourist attractions in Tsuwano that every tourist must see:
1. Tsuwano Castle Ruin
Located at the top of a small mountain, Tsuwano Castle Ruin offers a panoramic view of the town and its surrounding area. Visitors can climb a steep slope and walk through a pretty forested area to reach the castle’s ruins. The castle fortress was built in the 14th century, and while there is not much remaining of it, the location makes it worth the hike.
2. Tonomachi Street
This street is one of the best preserved Edo-period streets in Japan, and is lined with merchant shops, restaurants, and shops selling traditional Japanese crafts. It has the feel of an open-air museum, and visitors can stroll along its picturesque alleyways, admiring the traditional storefronts and structures, and taking in the scenic beauty.
3. Taikodani Inari Shrine
Taikodani Inari Shrine is situated in the hills above Tsuwano and enshrines Inari Okami, the God of Agriculture, as well as fox deities. Visitors can climb the steep steps that lead up to the main shrine, and on the way, they'll find countless red gates, small shrines, and stone Fox Torii gates. Depending on the time of year, the shrine has many festivals and rituals, and visitors can often witness a variety of traditional Japanese events.
4. Tsuwano Karakuri Yatai
Tsuwano Karakuri Yatai is a famous mechanical float, pulled during local festivals. At the front of the float, a mechanical puppeteer operates the strings that move several puns inside the float. The puppeteer can make the mechanisms play a catchy tune as they move, making for an unforgettable and unique sight.
5. Gyunabe Festival
The Gyunabe Festival is a traditional winter festival of Tsuwano, usually held on the last Sunday of January every year. The festival comprises of a massive meat-stew served in large pots on the street, as a way to celebrate a successful harvest. The stew is prepared with meat from three kinds of local cattle: Wagyu, Simmental, and Hereford. Visitors should go there and experience the taste of the hearty and delicious stew.
Tsuwano is a small town filled with a rich history and culture. The town's well-preserved structures, festivals, unique catering options, and restaurants all indelibly stamp Tsuwano's culture on a visitor's psyche.
