What to do in Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Srebrenica, a town located in Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a fascinating destination that has not yet been discovered by many tourists. While the town was once known as the site of one of the worst atrocities in European history, Srebrenica has much more to offer visitors than just its tragic past. Here are some of the top tourist attractions in Srebrenica worth checking out.

1. Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial and Cemetery

This is the most solemn and important attraction in Srebrenica. The memorial and cemetery are dedicated to the victims of the Srebrenica massacre, which occurred during the Bosnian War in 1995. It is estimated that over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed during the massacre, which was later recognized as a genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. The memorial and cemetery are situated on the site of the former UN base, where thousands of Bosniak refugees sought shelter during the war.

2. Srebrenica Old Town

The old town of Srebrenica is a charming area with narrow streets, old stone houses, and historic mosques. Although many of the buildings were damaged during the war, the old town has been slowly rebuilt and restored. One of the most impressive buildings in the area is the Mehmed Pasha Sokolović Bridge, which dates back to the Ottoman times.

3. Drina River

The Drina River runs through Srebrenica and is a popular spot for swimming, fishing, and picnics. The river is surrounded by lush forests and scenic mountains, making it an ideal place for hiking and nature walks. One of the most picturesque spots on the river is the Kravice waterfall, which is located about an hour's drive from Srebrenica.

4. Liplje Monastery

Located about 12 kilometers from Srebrenica, Liplje Monastery is an ancient Orthodox monastery that dates back to the 14th century. The monastery was built during the reign of Stefan Dušan, one of the most powerful Serbian rulers in history. The monastery has been restored several times over the centuries and is still an active place of worship today.

5. Potocari War Memorial

The Potocari War Memorial is a lesser-known memorial to the victims of the Srebrenica massacre. It is located about 5 kilometers from the town and was built on the site of a former Dutch military base where Bosniak refugees were gathered during the war. The memorial includes a museum, several monuments, and an eternal flame that burns in memory of the victims.

Srebrenica is a town that is still healing from the wounds of war, but it is also a place of great cultural and historical significance. It is a destination that should not be overlooked by tourists who are interested in understanding the complex history of the Balkans. With its stunning natural scenery, charming old town, and important memorials, Srebrenica is a destination that is both educational and inspiring.
