1. Flight 93 National Memorial - Located in Somerset County, this memorial is dedicated to the 40 individuals who died aboard United Airlines Flight 93 during the September 11, 2001 attacks. People come from all over the world to pay their respects to the brave passengers and crew who fought back against the terrorists. The memorial features a visitor center with exhibits, artifacts, and information about the events.
2. Kennywood Amusement Park - This family-friendly amusement park in West Mifflin has been in operation since 1898, making it one of the oldest in America. With over 40 rides, including record-breaking roller coasters and classic attractions like the carousel and the Ferris wheel, there’s plenty of fun to be had. Kennywood is especially popular during its seasonal events, such as Phantom Fright Nights and Holiday Lights.
3. Fallingwater - Designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, this home is one of his most famous works and is widely considered a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture. Built over a waterfall in Mill Run, the house seamlessly blends into the surrounding environment, with cantilevered terraces that offer sweeping views. Guided tours are available year-round.
4. Ohiopyle State Park - This park encompasses over 19,000 acres in Fayette County and offers a plethora of outdoor activities. Visitors can hike on scenic trails, bike on the Great Allegheny Passage, go whitewater rafting or kayaking, fish in the Youghiogheny River, or simply enjoy a picnic in the serene surroundings. The park also has campgrounds and cabins for overnight stays.
5. Carnegie Museum of Natural History - Located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood, this museum is home to an extensive collection of dinosaur fossils, minerals, and dioramas showcasing various ecosystems. The museum also features a planetarium, a butterfly exhibit, and numerous interactive displays that make learning about science fun and fascinating.
6. Fort Ligonier - This reconstructed fort in Ligonier was a strategic point during the French and Indian War and played a significant role in the conflict’s outcome. Visitors can hike or bike on the numerous trails, go fishing or boating on the lakes and rivers, or simply admire the beautiful landscape from various viewpoints.
