What to do in Sillustani, Peru

Sillustani is a small village located on the shores of Lake Umayo, in the Puno region of Peru. It is renowned for its fascinating archaeological site that is believed to have been the site of one of the most advanced pre-Inca cultures, the Colla people. The site of Sillustani boasts an impressive collection of megalithic towers or chullpas that were used as tombs to bury their elite members. These historical relics are among the top tourist attractions in Peru and the South America region.

The Chullpas

The highlight of Sillustani's archeological site is undoubtedly the ancient tower-like tombs called chullpas, which have survived for over a thousand years. The chullpas, made from stone, have an incredible cylindrical shape that stands tall and stark against the blue sky. The walls of the chullpas are smooth on the outside, but the interior features elaborate architectural details, such as niches and setbacks. The chullpas, therefore, represent the skills of Pre-Inca engineers.

The largest chullpa at Sillustani stands at an impressive 12 meters tall and appears to have been constructed in tiers or platforms with a circular opening at the top, which was likely used for ceremonial purposes.
