What to do in Sapo National Park, Liberia

Sapo National Park is the largest and oldest national park in Liberia, covering over 1,800 square kilometers of protected rainforest. The park is home to a diverse array of plant and animal species, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. For tourists looking for an immersive experience in nature, Sapo National Park is an excellent destination to explore. Here are some of the top tourist attractions in the park:

1. Wildlife Watching:

With a pristine rainforest environment ranging from lowland forest to montane forest, Sapo National Park is full of biodiversity. Approximately 125 mammals, 600 bird species and 200 species of reptiles and amphibians live in the park. Here, you can spot wildlife such as chimpanzees, forest elephants, pygmy hippos, West African manatees, and more.

2. Hiking:

Sapo National Park has many trails, where visitors can walk and hike through lush forests, savannas, and rivers. Bird enthusiasts will find themselves drawn to the jungle's stunted trees and doves.

3. Canoeing:

Visitors can also explore the remotest parts of the Park by canoe on the beautiful Yar River, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean, passing through undisturbed forests, abundant wetlands and sandy beaches.

4. Waterfalls:

The picturesque Tukpo Waterfall is also located within the park, and visitors can trek along the river in search of the waterfall, then refresh themselves from the spray of the fall amid

5. Visit the Conservation Biology Camp:

This camp serves as a base for researchers and park staff to carry out conservation activities. Visitors can pay visits to observe the scientists and conservationists who work on the park wildlife and meet other indigenous people in the region's nearby settlement.

Lastly, it's essential to consider that Liberia's civil war destroys much of the national park's infrastructure, and it may take a while before the park returns to its pre-war beauty. Nevertheless, if you are looking for an eco-friendly, nature-rich destination to spend your vacations, Sapo National Park is a must-visit spot.
