What to do in Northumberland National Park, England, United Kingdom
Northumberland National Park is located in the north east of England and is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. It stretches over 400 square miles and is home to some of the UK’s best preserved and most remote landscapes. With its rolling hills, ancient woodlands, dramatic coastlines and abundance of wildlife, it's no wonder that it's a must-visit destination for anyone heading to the UK.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the top tourist attractions in Northumberland National Park.
1. Hadrian’s Wall
Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the UK and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in AD 122, it stretches 73 miles from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. The wall was built to mark the northern boundary of the Roman Empire and today it’s a fantastic place to explore.
You can walk along the wall itself or head to one of the many museums and visitor centres along the route. One of the highlights is the Roman Army Museum, which features interactive exhibits that bring the history of the wall to life.
2. Kielder Water and Forest Park
Kielder Water and Forest Park is home to the largest man-made lake in northern Europe, which is over 11km long. There are plenty of things to see and do in the park, from walking and cycling to birdwatching and stargazing.
One of the best ways to explore the park is by taking a trip on the Kielder Water Cruise, which takes you on a tour of the lake and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
3. Alnwick Castle and Gardens
Alnwick Castle and Gardens is a fantastic day out for all the family. The castle is home to the Duke of Northumberland and has featured in many films and TV shows, including Harry Potter and Downton Abbey.
The castle’s magnificent gardens are also worth exploring, with highlights including the Poison Garden and the Grand Cascade. There are plenty of activities for children too, including a treehouse and adventure playground.
4. Simonside Hills
The Simonside Hills are a range of hills that offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape. There are plenty of walking trails to choose from, ranging from easy strolls to more challenging hikes.
One of the best routes is the Simonside Ridge Walk, which takes you along a ridge with fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. At the top of the ridge, you can also explore the ancient rock carvings at Lordenshaw.
5. Holy Island
Holy Island is a small island located off the coast of Northumberland. It's home to the Lindisfarne Priory, which was founded in AD 635 and played an important role in the spread of Christianity in the UK.
Visitors can explore the priory ruins and learn about the island’s history at the museum. You can also take a walk along the stunning coastline or visit the famous Lindisfarne Meadery to try some locally produced mead.
