What to do in Northeastern Bosnia, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Located in the eastern half of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the northeastern region is full of picturesque landscapes, historical sites, and cultural events. Here are some of the top tourist attractions in the area that you should definitely check out during your visit.
1. Srebrenica Memorial Center
The Srebrenica Memorial Center is a museum dedicated to the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide. The museum features several indoor and outdoor exhibits that tell the story of the tragedy that happened in the town of Srebrenica. The museum offers visitors the chance to learn about the genocide, reflect on its consequences and honor the victims.
2. Pliva Waterfall
The scenic Pliva Waterfall located near the town of Jajce is a must-see attraction for anyone traveling to northeastern Bosnia. Plunging 22m from a rocky cliff, the waterfall offers a stunning view that is perfect for taking photos. Visitors can also enjoy nearby cafes and restaurants or explore several walking trails and natural parks around the waterfall.
3. Kozara National Park
Kozara National Park is a perfect destination for nature lovers. Located in the south of Bosanska Krajina, the park covers more than 33,000 hectares of beautiful forested hills, river valleys, and abundant wildlife. Visitors can enjoy several hiking trails, a zip line adventure park, and various outdoor activities such as biking, fishing, and camping.
4. Doboj Fortress
The Doboj fortress is one of the largest surviving medieval fortresses in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fortress was built in the 13th century and over the years served as a defensive stronghold for several different ruling empires. Today it is open to the public and serves as a venue for cultural events and diverse exhibitions, as well as hosting the annual “Doboj Fortress Summer Festival”.
5. Vjetrenica Cave
Located near the town of Trebinje, Vjetrenica Cave is one of the largest and most beautiful karstic caves in the world, with over 6 km of passages and breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours of the cave are available on request, allowing visitors to explore the numerous chambers and to experience the unique tranquility of this underground world.
Northeastern Bosnia has a wealth of cultural and natural attractions that will fascinate tourists of all interests.
