London Stansted Airport may be known as a transportation hub for travelers from around the globe, but it is also home to some of the best tourist attractions in the city of London. For visitors with some time to spare between flights or with a few hours to kill before their flight, here is a list of top tourist attractions worth checking out in and around London Stansted Airport.
1. Mountfitchet Castle and Norman Village - This unique attraction is just 10 minutes by taxi from the airport and takes visitors back in time to the 11th century. Featuring reconstructed Norman buildings, markets and living quarters, along with interactive and educational exhibits, this attraction is a great way to experience history in a fun and engaging way.
2. Audley End House and Gardens - A short drive from the airport, this grand mansion is set in picturesque landscaped gardens and features restored Victorian interiors, a tea room and a gift shop. Visitors can take a guided tour of the house, while the gardens and parkland offer plenty of opportunities for a leisurely stroll or a picnic.
3. Hatfield Forest - Just a 10 minute drive from the airport, this ancient royal hunting forest is a peaceful oasis, with miles of walking trails and plenty of wildlife to spot. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as fishing, cycling and horse riding.
4. The Dunmow Flitch Trials - Held every four years in the nearby town of Great Dunmow, this unique tradition dates back to the 13th century and honors married couples who have remained faithful to each other. Couples must convince a judge and jury that they have not argued or regretted their marriage in order to win a flitch of bacon (a popular prize in the Middle Ages).
5. Cambridge - Just 45 minutes by train from the airport, Cambridge is home to one of the world's most famous universities, as well as a wealth of historic buildings, museums, galleries and restaurants. Visitors can take a punting tour along the River Cam, explore the famous King's College Chapel or immerse themselves in the quaint charm of the city's narrow streets and open squares.
