If you go to Green Lake Park, you're likely to do a lot of walking. These are a must:

Good hiking shoes
These are designed for this kind of walking, and can breathe and can get wet
Binoculars

Save money on drinks with this portable cooler.
December
December in this region is relatively cool. Temperatures average in the high 50s F (mid 10s C) during the day.
What to wear/what to pack:
Clothes + Footwear
Light gloves or mittens
Fleece
Jacket or coat
Warm pants or jeans
Lip balm
In our opinion, the best option: this
Extra socks
Sneakers or comfortable shoes
Health
Travel disinfecting wipes
Use these to sanitize plane and hotel surfaces.
Travel first aid kit
This one is a good kit.
Virus/bacteria filtering water bottle
Some rural areas may have unreliable tap water, so it's useful to take a contaminant filtering water bottle.
Emergency motion sickness relief
Hand sanitizer
This hand sanitizer is an easy-to-carry TSA-friendly product.
Safety + Security
Voice and data SIM card
A SIM card that works in Kunming. A good global SIM card works in most countries, but check the country list before buying. In some more rural areas you may need a satellite phone. We recommend this satellite phone.
Room protection door lock
If going to a hostel or AirBNB, protect yourself with a portable door lock.
AirTag to track your luggage
With airports always losing bags recently, an AirTag can locate it anywhere in the world: AirTag for iPhones.
Money/passport pouch
Pickpocketing is an issue here, so wear a money pouch.
Anti-theft backpack
For some more peace of mind, an anti-theft backpack protects your belongings.
China has some specific safety concerns that you should consider before going. Click for more information.
Comfort + Essentials
Power bank for devices
A portable power bank, like this one
Voltage adapter
A plug adapter that supports outlet types A, C and I. Be sure to pick the right type. The majority of adapters on sale are just plugs and require your electronics to adjust the voltage themselves. If yours can't do that they could burn up. This one should be sufficient for most places.
Travel pillow
Our favorite is this one
Airplane phone mount
Make your flight more comfortable with an airplane phone mount
Luggage scale to avoid fees
Airlines charge large amounts for overweight luggage. Avoid surcharges with this

What to do in Kunming, China
Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in China, is known as the "Spring City" thanks to its mild climate and year-round spring-like temperatures. But beyond the pleasant weather, Kunming is also home to an array of top tourist attractions that make it a popular destination for both domestic and international travelers. Here are some of the must-see sights when visiting Kunming.
1. Stone Forest (Shilin) - This natural wonder is one of Kunming's most famous attractions, featuring a vast expanse of limestone rock formations that resemble a forest. The area covers over 200 square kilometers and includes countless peaks, pillars, and caves. The Stone Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit for its unique geological formations and stunning landscapes.
2. Yuantong Temple - Considered one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Yunnan, Yuantong Temple dates back over 1,200 years. The temple complex includes several important halls, courtyards, and gardens, as well as a large pond filled with lotus flowers. Visitors can also climb up to the top of the hill behind the temple for a panoramic view of Kunming.
3. Dian Lake - This picturesque lake is the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan and a popular spot for local residents and tourists alike. Dian Lake offers plenty of outdoor activities, such as boating, fishing, hiking, and cycling, as well as scenic spots like temples, pavilions, and gardens.
4. Green Lake Park - Located in the heart of Kunming, Green Lake Park is an urban oasis that offers a peaceful respite from the bustle of the city. The park features a large lake surrounded by gardens, bridges, walkways, and pavilions. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll, feed the fish, watch local musicians and dancers, or simply sit and relax in the beautiful setting.
5. Western Hills and Dragon Gate - The Western Hills are a range of low mountains that stretch from the outskirts of Kunming to the Dian Lake. The mountains offer stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside, as well as some beautiful temples and pagodas. The highlight of the Western Hills is the Dragon Gate, a series of stonework stairs, pavilions, and sculptures that climb up the steep mountain face.
6. Yunnan Nationalities Village - This theme park showcases the cultural diversity of Yunnan's many ethnic groups, including the Bai, Yi, Dai, and Tibetan peoples.
