What to do in Gozo, Malta
As one of the most popular Mediterranean hotspots in Europe, Malta is famous for its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery, and fascinating medieval architecture. But what about its lesser-known neighbor island of Gozo? If you're traveling to Malta, be sure to take a quick ferry ride across to Gozo to discover some of its top tourist attractions and hidden gems.
1. The Citadel of Victoria
Also known as Rabat, Victoria's historical heart is the Citadel, which overlooks the town from a high plateau. Dating back to the Bronze Age, a sequence of Phoenician walls, Roman ramparts, medieval fortifications and British-era barracks still stand today, showcasing each era in vivid detail. Visitors can enter the citadel via its main gate, the Main Gate, and wander along the many streets, alleys and tunnels of its maze-like interior.
2. Azure Window
The Azure Window was a beautiful natural arch found on the west coast of Gozo, stretching out to sea like a cylindrical rock formation. Alas, it was unfortunately destroyed by a fierce storm in 2017, but it remains a popular destination nonetheless. Many visitors still visit the site to admire the rugged coastline and beautiful sea views.
3. Ta' Pinu Basilica
The Ta' Pinu Basilica is one of the most beautiful churches in Malta, featuring a unique Neo-Gothic style and stunning stained glass windows. Devoted to the Virgin Mary, the church is a usual stop for pilgrims, and visitors who come to marvel at its striking architecture. Every year, on the 15th of August the church is celebrated in a festivity.
4. Ramla Bay
Ramla Bay is one of the prettiest beaches in Gozo, featuring a crystal-clear sea and golden sands with an exceptional view of the sunset. Visitors can relax on the beach, take a dip in the sea, or explore the nearby ruins of an ancient Roman villa complex.
5. Ggantija Temples
The Ggantija Temples are one of the world's most fascinating megalithic structures, dating back over 5,500 years. Made from solid stone, the temple towers are a testament to the incredible architectural skills of the mysterious prehistoric civilization that built them. Visitors can learn about the intricate construction techniques used by the ancient Gozitans while exploring the site.
6. Xlendi Bay
The Xlendi Bay is a small fishing village located on the west coast of Gozo, surrounded by high cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It has a picturesque beach, a number of charming restaurants, and great snorkeling opportunities. Visitors can take a relaxing walk along the beach, have a delicious meal in one of the local restaurants, or take a boat ride around the bay.
7. Mgarr Beach
