1. Ingalls Homestead: This living history farm is a must-visit for fans of the "Little House" books. Visitors can tour the original home of the Ingalls family, as well as a reconstructed one-room schoolhouse and covered wagon. Guests can also try their hand at pioneer activities like churning butter and grinding wheat, and can even camp overnight on the homestead.
2. Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society: This museum and research center pays tribute to the life and work of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who lived in De Smet as a young girl. Exhibits include memorabilia from the "Little House" books, as well as artifacts from Wilder's life and letters and manuscripts from her writing career.
3. Harvey Dunn School: Art lovers won't want to miss a chance to visit the Harvey Dunn School, which showcases the work of South Dakota's most famous artist. Harvey Dunn was a student of illustration greats Howard Pyle and Frank Brangwyn, and later went on to become a celebrated painter in his own right. The school features a rotating selection of Dunn's works, as well as temporary exhibits by other artists.
4. Lake Thompson: Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the beauty of Lake Thompson, a large natural lake located just outside of De Smet. Visitors can go boating, fishing, or swimming in the clear waters, or take a walk along the shore and enjoy the scenery. The lake is also a popular spot for birdwatching, with dozens of species of water birds nesting in the area.
5. Historic Downtown: De Smet's charming historic downtown is worth a stroll for its quaint shops and restaurants, many of which are housed in historic buildings. Visitors can stop in at the De Smet Depot Museum, housed in an original railway depot, to learn more about the town's early history as a railroad hub.
