The Academy Awards 2017 took place last night and the usual movies got most of the big awards.

What surprised everyone though is that Suicide Squad took home an award for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. This is actually the first win for the new DC cinematic universe.

The new DC cinematic universe started with Man of Steel back in 2013. Man of Steel wasn't nominated for any Academy Awards and remains a divisive movie to this day.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the next movie and that won many Razzie Awards instead. The Razzie Awards reward the worst movies of the year if you never heard of them before...

Suicide Squad was also critically panned, although The Academy must have loved the makeup done on Killer Croc and other characters. The movie beat out the other two contenders that included Star Trek Beyond and A Man Called Ove.

The thing that makes Suicide Squad's win so humorous is that is has achieved something that a lot of movies don't do and that's win an Academy Award of any kind.

Many more respected films such as The Shawshank Redemption, Batman Begins and more have been nominated but didn't take home any Oscar.

DC fans are also celebrating mainly because the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to win an Oscar of any kind. Marvel films have been nominated several times for things like Best Visual Effects, but they got beat by other movies.

The closest victory is Spider-Man 2 which won Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

However even though Spider-Man is a Marvel character, that movie was produced by Sony and not Marvel Studios. The modern MCU didn't start until the 2008 release of Iron Man.

Anyway, it's always nice to see an underdog like Suicide Squad win an Academy Award. It will be interesting if a movie like Logan can win some awards at next year's event.
