Netflix's surprise hit, Stranger Things, was written and directed by the Duffer brothers and managed to stay true to the 1980's time period theme in practically every way.

Not to mention, the series is bursting with plot twists, action packed scene and characters whose depths are explored to the hilt.

So, just who are the Duffer brothers and why had we never heard of them before? We'll give you the scoop on these film masterminds.

The Duffer brothers are twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer. Stranger Things isn't their first venture either. The Duffer brothers' first release was the 2015 horror film, Hidden.

Interestingly, the film has some similarities to Stranger Things.

Hidden focuses on a post-apocalyptic world in which a virus has devastated the earth's population and a family of three must take refuge in a shelter, where they may still be vulnerable to the monsters outside.

The script was read by M.Night Shyamalan, who hired the Duffer brothers as writers and producers on the Fox TV series, Wayward Pines.

From there, the Duffer brothers catapulted their way into stardom. They came up with the premise for Stranger Things and pitched it, eventually bringing it to Shawn Levy's 21 Laps production company.

And that's how Stranger Things was picked up by Netflix. Though the series was orginally pictured as taking place in the setting of Montauk, Long Island, the setting was later changed to Hawkins, Indiana.

Though the Duffer brothers first major hit is Stranger Things, they've been making movies since the 3rd grade.

And their favorite subject matter? Unknown, dark and supernatural forces of course? The brother have also said that Stephen King, including the story "It," has been a major influence for their work.
