Much like the Christmas holidays, the two movies expected to rule the Box Office on New Year's weekend in North America are Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

Both films are going to have decent four day weekend results.

As noted by Box Office Pro, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is expected to be number one again this weekend. The current trajectory for the film is for it to earn $70 million over the four day weekend,

The Last Jedi is already one of the highest grossing films in North American history. It overtook The Phantom Menace to be the tenth highest grossing movie in North America earning $483.3 million in just 15 days.

This weekend, the movie will overtake both Beauty and the Beast, Finding Dory and The Dark Knight on the top 10 list. It looks like the polarizing reactions from some fans haven't stopped many people from watching the movie for themselves.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is doing extremely well over the holidays even though it's in direct competition with Star Wars. Over the four day weekend, the film is expected to gross somewhere between $66 million to $70 million.

There's a good chance Jumanji 2 could even make more money that Star Wars this weekend. The film is exceeding expectations thanks to a stellar cast starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian and Jack Black.

There aren't that many big new releases coming out this week so it's expected Jumanji and Star Wars will dominate the Box Office for the weeks to come.

Christmas/New Year's has been a good period for films since there is less competition than in the Summer where a new blockbuster comes out nearly every week.

It will be interesting to see the final totals for both The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. With both movies doing good, movie studios might choose Christmas over the Summer to release their films now.
