Both "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals" have had monster seasons in 2014 and it seems like the shows are only get better with time.

Voting Ends January 9

"The Vampire Diaries" is the show from which "The Originals" was derived from. It has now gone well into six solid seasons and the intensity just continues to build.

The writers have managed to create one of the most interesting dynamics the show has seen thus far by bringing in an all new villain in Kai (Christopher Wood).

They have even suffered from the bouncing around of love stories until they have finally found a medium which makes Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) stop fighting over the same woman Elena (Nina Dobrev).

Staying true to it's roots the show focuses solely on vampirism and witchcraft with a sprinkle of werewolves in Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino). Reinventing the roles of characters that weren't always a main character has worked well. Especially when it comes to Caroline (Candice Accola).

Caroline is now the love interest of one of the main characters, thus catapulting her into a lead role of her own.

There is no doubt that Bonnie (Kat Graham) is a vital part of the show, after all, she is the victim that needs to be rescued from the other side.

But with Elena being trapped in a cloaking spell with Kai, will she become a second priority once again?

Bonnie's character deserves much better than what she has been given. However, if there is one thing that "The Vampire Diaries" fans know, it's that the writers of the show always find a way to bring everything full circle in the end.

Fans will have to wait and see how it all plays out at the end of January.

The introduction of new characters such as Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke Parker (Chris Brochu), Jo (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) have also made it easier for fans to deal with the separation of the cast of "The Originals." All in all it is the originator, the introduction and the breeding ground for "The Originals" spin off show on The CW. Does the seniority make it an overall more interesting show than "The Originals" ?

What the writers of "The Originals" have managed to do with the show is remarkable. They have completely annexed "The Originals" from any involvement in Mystic Falls for around two seasons now building it into something, well, original.

Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), Rebekah (Claire Holt), Cole/Kaleb (Daniel Sharman), Finn/Vincent (Yusuf Gatewood) and the rest of the Mikaelson family are now in charge of their own Mystic Falls which takes the form of the French Quarter in Louisiana.

As this season rages on all of the siblings but Finn have managed to come together to fight against their parents Esther and Mikael, keeping in mind Cole or Kaleb seems to be paying both sides of the field.

The introduction of Davina (Danielle Campbell) and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) enhance the storyline by making it fresh with Davina while maintaining history with Marcel. It will be interesting to see how the werewolves and vampires come together for the greater good of protecting their leader Hayley's (Phoebe Tonkin) baby. Hayley is yet another example of character who has managed to break out of her small role to become a major character in the show.

There are many obvious similarities in both shows that could be nitpicked all day. When all is said and done both shows have been hits with a dedicated and growing fan base.

The choice isn't always clear especially when the same writers are involved. That being said seniority would have to be the deciding factor here and for that reason "The Vampire Diaries" is Empty Lighthouse's pick.

Chances are if you watch one you're probably watching the other but after the mid-season finale of "The Originals" and "The Vampire Diaries," what show reigns supreme at this point? We are letting the fans decide.

Vote below. "The Vampire Diaries" is set to resume on January 22, while "The Originals" makes it's was back on January 19.
