Last year, it was announced that Avengers director Joss Whedon was on board to direct a film based on Batgirl. However sad news has come today revealing that Whedon is no longer directing the movie.

As reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, Joss Whedon is exiting the project of Batgirl. It appears he is no longer directing and writing the film as confirmed by his statement you can see down below.

Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn't have a story. I'm grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for 'failed?'

The reason Whedon has stepped down from the project is mainly because he felt he wasn't able to write a good story for Batgirl.

Industry insiders also said in today's climate, it would be more appropriate for a woman to write and direct the film.

After all, the Batgirl character was criticized due to the way she was portrayed in The Killing Joke animated movie that came out in 2016. The film needs someone that knows the character inside and out that won't make fans cringe.

Whedon's last project was finishing off the Justice League movie after Zack Snyder had to pull out due to a family tragedy.

Despite the film bringing together most of DC's popular heroes, Justice League was considered to be a disappointment since it went on to become the lowest grossing DCEU film released to date.

It will be interesting to see who overtakes Joss Whedon as the director and writer for Batgirl. Most Hollywood directors are currently occupied with other future projects at the moment.
