Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Tops The Box Office With Massive Debut

Guardians of the Galaxy was without a doubt the riskiest venture for Marvel to date with their Marvel Cinematic Universe when it debuted back in 2014. The movie managed to not only be well received, but was a major success in the box office that few expected, which has made the hype for the second even higher.

The wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is over and it had a fantastic opening weekend.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy debuted to $94.3 million, which was a good bit higher than expected then.

We knew the sequel would build on that quite a bit and that it did with a nearly 54% increase on the original by bringing in an estimated $145 million according to Box Office Mojo.

While this total could go up or down once the final total is in, it's bound to be around this number.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted earlier in other territories, but it still brought in another $123.8 million to bring the overall worldwide total $427.6 million when including the US total.

Putting this number into perspective, this is the largest increase for a first to second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's not the highest increase for a sequel in general though, as Captain America: Civil War holds that title with an 88% increase on Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had a smash opening, it isn't the biggest opening of the year to date.

That title belongs to Beauty and the Beast that released back in March to $174 million.

Based on past Marvel movies, we're assuming this movie will have really solid legs after release, though how well other upcoming movies over the coming weeks do will always have an impact on that.
