What happens when you give James Gunn (writer/director of Slither and Super) control of Marvel's newest addition to their superhero franchise empire? You get Guardians of the Galaxy.

Gunn is known for his signature style of blending comedy with action, horror, and sci-fi. This film is no exception. There's a laugh a minute right up until, and often throughout, the visually thrilling action sequences.

We also see for the first time in the MCU a bold blend of make-up and props along with the use of CGI. There are times when this is conflicting, but it's easy to get over after being distracted by the amazing script and performances of everyone in the cast.

This will be the first Marvel film released in this franchise based on a series that has not been a household name.

It was very apparent that a lot of care was put into the script to please the fanboys, and at the same time make it accessible to an audience coming in without any background knowledge.

There is no doubt that Guardians will be one of the top grossing films of the year, and well deserved. Some people not knowing what to expect will be happy to find there's a new film franchise in town that packs enough of a punch to go toe to toe with any of the leading super hero series out today.

It will be exciting to see where they go from here. The only foreseeable dilemma? How do you top that?
