It goes without saying that the Hollywood version of Ghost in the Shell has had an icy reception ever since it was first announced.

Many people criticized the casting of Scarlett Johansson as the anime had a Japanese woman in the role. Despite the backlash, what do the critics think of it?

Well the review embargo for Ghost in the Shell has lifted and it's not a disaster by any means. If you go on Rotten Tomatoes, you'll see that the movie currently has a rating of 67% as of time of writing.

16 reviewers give it a thumbs up, while 8 of them gave it a thumbs down. This rating can go up or down depending on what others think of it. The critics consensus blurb can be seen below.

"Ghost in the Shell boasts cool visuals and a compelling central performance from Scarlett Johansson, even if the end result lacks the magic of the movie's classic source material.

It seems many reviewers are liking the visual effects more than anything else.

The thing that prevents it from being perfect is the story. Many of them feel the story is too cliche and that it borrows too many ideas off of Ridley Scott's Bladerunner.

There are a few reviewers out there that praise Scarlett Johansson's performance. It will be interesting to see what the hardcore fans of the anime think of it.

Those fans will be more familiar with the source material more than the casual movie critics. The film itself is opening in North America on March 31st.

Overall, a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is not bad. Sure the movie could have been better since the original anime has a 95% rating. It will be interesting if this live action remake is successful enough to spawn any sequels...

Update: The rating has dropped a lot lower than when we first posted this article. The rating is now 42%. The audience score is not that great either with 65%.
