Ed Skrein Steps Down From Hellboy Reboot Due To White Washing

Ed Skrein (who played Ajax in Deadpool) has stepped down from a role in the upcoming Hellboy reboot movie.

The actor wants to do the right thing in order for the filmmakers to honor ethnic diversity. The actor at first didn't know the ethnicity of the character he was playing when he signed up.

Skrien signed up to play the character of Major Ben Daimio in the Hellboy reboot just a few days ago. Major Ben Daimio is a Japanese-American character while Skrein is a white British man.

Skrein felt uncomfortable taking up the role once he found out more about the character. He announced he is stepping down from the role on Twitter. Some of his statment can be read below.

Representation of ethnic diversity is important, especially to me as I have a mixed heritage family. It is our responsibility to make moral decisions in difficult times and to give voice to inclusively. Is is my hope that one day these discussions will become less necessary and that we can help make equal representation in the Arts a reality. I am sad to leave Hellboy but if this brings us closer to that day, it is worth it. I hope it makes a difference.

Skrien specifically made the decision himself to step down from the role and the producers honored it. The producers are now looking to recast the role of Major Ben Daimio.

If they are to honor the comic book character accurately, they need someone that is of Japanese descent, or at least a mixed Asian American. The Hellboy reboot is set to be released sometime in 2018.
