Star Wars: The Last Jedi is highly likely to be the top grossing movie of 2017.

However, it may not reach the astronomical heights of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Still, the movie is on track to earn a lot of money both in North America and around the world.

BoxOffice.com has made a prediction on Star Wars: The Last Jedi's North American Box Office earnings in its 'Long Range Forecast' article.

The website predicts that the movie will earn around $215 million in its opening weekend in North America. This is lower than the $247.9 million opening weekend that Star Wars: The Force Awakens got two years ago.

In terms of its overall North American earnings, The Last Jedi could be earning $742 million.

This is enough to overtake Avatar's North American total, but lower than The Force Awaken's domestic earnings of $936.6 million. These numbers are not adjusted for inflation.

Bear in mind, this is just an early estimate as the numbers could get higher closer to the film's release date in December.

BoxOffice.com thinks the movie will earn less than The Force Awakens mainly because middle chapters in trilogies don't earn more than their predecessors. Both The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones earned less than the first chapters.

The earnings of The Last Jedi will ultimately depend on how good the movie is. Some people didn't like The Force Awakens because it felt more like a remake than a sequel.

We will have to wait and see if The Last Jedi is more than just rehashing storylines from the original trilogy. The movie releases in North America on December 15th, 2017.
